(a) At what degree angle the axis of the earth is inclined?
Ans: The Earth’s axis of rotation is tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees relative to the vertical line perpendicular to the plane of its orbit. This tilt is responsible for the changing seasons throughout the year.
(b) How long does the earth take to complete one revolution around the sun?
Ans: Earth takes 365 days to complete one revolution around the Sun.
(c) What is circle of illumination?
Ans: An imaginary circle divides the earth between the occurrence of day and night. This circle is called illumination circle.
(d) On which dates of the year sun rays fall vertically on the equator?
Ans: On March 21st and September 23rd, direct rays of the Sun fall on the Equator.
2. Answer the following:
(a) What do you mean by rotation and revolution?
Ans: The stars and the planets of the solar system attract each other and the planets have motion due to this attraction. As a planet, the earth is also moving. The motion is of two types, In one motion the earth spins on its own axis and with the other motion it also moves around the sun. Thus, the former motion of the earth on its axis is called rotation and the latter movement around the sun is called revolution.
(b) How do the days and nights occur due to rotation?
Ans: The rotation of the earth causes day and night. The sun, the moon, the stars seem to move from east to west because the earth spins from east to west.The part of the earth which faces the sun experiences the daytime whereas the part away from the sun gets no sunlight and hence the night. The axis of the earth’s rotation is tilted at 23.5 degrees.
(c) What is a Leap Year?
Ans: A leap year is a year with an extra day. The additional day is added to the month of February in that year. Thus February has 29 days and that year has 366 days. Such a year is called a Leap Year.
(d) Differentiate between the summer and winter solstices.
Ans: The summer solstice, the longest day of the year, occurs when the Sun is at its highest point in the sky. and the winter solstice occurs when the sun is at its lowest point in the sky.
(e) What may happen had there been no revolution of earth?
Ans: If Earth did not rotate on its axis, one side would constantly face the Sun and become extremely hot, while the other would remain in darkness and become very cold. This would make life unsustainable.

(f) What do you mean by the earth’s orbit. Explain with the help of a diagram
Ans: The earth while rotating on its axis also revolves around the sun. This motion of the earth is called revolution. The earth revolves around the sun from west to east along an elliptical orbit. The earth takes 365 days and almost 6 hours (i.e. about 365 1/2 days) to complete one revolution around the sun. The time taken by the earth to go round the sun once is called a year. Thus revolution is also called the annual motion of the earth.
