(a) Maniram Dewan.
Ans: Maniram Dutta Barua, variously known as Barua Babu or Maniram Dewan, was a native of Assam who fought against the British in the uprising of 1857. He was the first Indian who entered tea cultivation and had his own tea garden in Chenimore in Jorhat district.
(b) Phulgurir Dhewa.

(c) Immediate cause of sepoy.
Ans: The immediate cause of the revolt was the introduction of the new Enfield rifle. A rumour spread among the sepoys that the grease used to lubricate the cartridges was a mixture of pigs’ and cows’ bone dust which hurt the sentiments of both the Hindus and Muslims.

Ans: In 1857 had cartridges that required soldiers to bite off the ends of greased cartridges to load them. Rumours quickly spread that the grease was laced with cow and pig fat, which was offensive to both Hindu and Muslim sepoys. Their religions strictly prohibited them from consuming these animals, and by biting the cartridges, they felt they were being forced to break their religious codes.This incident served as a spark that ignited the already simmering discontent among the sepoys. They felt discriminated against in terms of pay, promotion prospects, and service conditions compared to their British counterparts. The introduction of the new cartridges became a symbol of British disrespect for their religious beliefs and cultural practices, ultimately contributing to the eruption of the Sepoy Mutiny.
6. How far was the policy adopted by Lord Dalhousie responsible for the outbreak of sepoy mutiny?
Ans: The policies adopted by Lord Dalhousie, the Governor-General of India from 1848 to 1856, played a significant role in the buildup to the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, also known as the Indian Rebellion of 1857. While it would be an oversimplification to attribute the mutiny solely to Dalhousie’s policies, they certainly contributed to the discontent that fueled the rebellion.

Ans: There are various names for the revolt of 1857 – India’s First War of Independence, Sepoy Mutiny, etc. The revolt began on May 10, 1857, at Meerut as a sepoy mutiny. It was initiated by sepoys in the Bengal Presidency against the British officers.
